Surprise marriage proposals are truly one of my favorite kinds of sessions to capture. I live for the secret planning, the coordination of time and place, and watching for the signal when my clients go down on one knee. This particular client was traveling from out of town, so we quickly spoke over the phone and discussed plans as to when and how to capture the exact moment. In this situation, I was in charge of giving him the signal to let him know when I would be ready. This is not often the case with surprise proposals. I'll explain further below.
His partner knew that I was going to be there since this was originally part of an extended family session booked by his partner's future sister-in-law. He requested to propose to his girlfriend as part of the session and of course, my heart jumped with excitement. Of course, I would be more than happy to document this exciting moment for them. This weekend, we got so very lucky with sun (thanks Seattle!), so we talked about him proposing right at the beginning of golden hour. Discovery Park in Seattle, WA is a spot that is very special to this family, plus I'm very familiar with this park having photographed so many families and couples there last year.
The scenic part of this park is a cliff edge that looks out over the city and the beautiful beach below. It's the perfect spot to illuminate faces and capture a dramatic moment like this; especially on a clear day. During golden hour, it's simply spectacular. Wanna know what my signal was? I told my client that I would walk them over to a spot and then I simply said: "Hey! Let's grab some photos of the two of you. It's so pretty here!" Some quick positioning and I basically told him I was ready. I'm sure he was relieved. Such a big life question to ask!
Since I consider myself a candid style photographer among a sea of photographers who like to pose their clients, real life surprise moments like this are so satisfying for me to capture. I love it all! The element of surprise never gets old to me. Having her family there to witness the proposal was incredibly special, and I will post photos from their entire session in a future blog post. Planning to propose to your partner soon?
